Do you have any other 'disks' to try ?  This would confirm whether it is
the drive or the media being used.

The Syquest drives are not 'happy' if you do not dismount the drive
properly.  Either through a software generated dismount, or through the
hardware eject button on the drive.

Another solution is to 'gently' shake the media before inserting it into
the drive ... it can spin slightly eccentric at times, which may be the
'noise' that you are getting.
