Hi All,
Simon Goodwin is probably the best person to contact if you need to get hold of William James (his emulator was called SPECULATOR, and Simon helped on the code) They are both involved deeply with Linux and Amigas now, and that emulator hasn't been updated since about 1993. If its a PD emulator you're after, ZeXcel is by far the best. Written by Ergon (Davide Santachiara) and was the one I used for the Spectrum Emulator CD I did for the QL a while ago (this has about 300Mb of games on it, ordered alphabetically). Needs the Pointer Environment and a very fast processor ie. Super Gold card or QXL or a fast QPC machine. Very compatible with all the files I tried - runs the common .Z80 files found on Spectrum internet sites just fine. I always found Spectator a bit crap (sorry Dr. Delhez) and hasn't been updated in donkeys years - Xtricator, the ZX81 emulator he did was much better (he did a QL and PC version). Speculator looks good on screen and even came with a funky little piece of software called QSPEC which allowed you to read spectrum audio cassettes directly via the QL network ports in much the same way as a real spectrum, although this had to be purchased for the full version - the version in the QUANTA library is limited to small files I think. I'll ask Simon. ZeXcel is probably the best one to be updated for GD2 use if any are, as its the most recent of all QL Spectrum emulators, and works on all systems I've tried, plus its pointer driven, and overall is very polished. It already uses some clever shading techniques to give the illusion of 8 colours of the Spectrum when you are actually running it in MODE 4 on the QL. There are a vast range of configurable options in it - ie. you can run games in monochrome to speed them up if running on a slower system. Maybe Davide can throw more light on this if he is listening..... Davide? Cheers, Darren Branagh, Bank Of Ireland Card Services, Nassau House, 33/35 Nassau Street, Dublin 2. Were they released to the pd? Some were, I think the zmht wasn't. Most of the spectrum emulators came from Davide Santachiara's company Ergon Development in Italy. Spectator was by Dr Carlo Delhez (he of QL Ungif and Zxtricator ZX81 emulator fame) There is another Spectrum emulator by William James, don't remember its name. ZexCel from Ergon is freeware. >2. Are the authors still involved in the QL scene. In most cases, no. Dr Carlo Delhez has his own Zxtricator website and may be contactable via that. Davide Santachiara is contactable (I think he's still ont his list), but not very active at the moment, while I don't know about William James >3. If they are, and if they read this list, would it be possible to update >(especially the Dynamic Compiler emulator (It was the ZM/Ht IIRC)) to use >the GD2... (and maybe some other roms apart from the mainstream 48 and 128 K)? Darren Branagh has compiled a Spectrum CD recently and may be able to add further information. -- Dilwyn Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.soft.net.uk/dj/index.html ******************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed.
