I tried the ld -L command and it gave the same error. "Cannot open 
binary file crt_o".  All the SETENVs were correct, taken from the boot 
file supplied with C68.
I extracted a fresh copy of crt_o from the zip, and that didn't fix it 
either.
Finally, I extracted the whole package from the zips, over the old 
installation.
That fixed it; didn't even need to reboot the machine.  A mystery.  
Something obviously got deleted or corrupted, and if I'd had the time 
or motivation I might've been able to go through file by file until I 
discovered what it was.
But the sledgehammer approach did the job! :O)
