Can anyone tell me how to read the total screen size from either
assembly or 'C'?

You really ought to get hold of the SMS/QDOS Reference Manual from Jochen - that explains how to do it.
In the meantime, to save me having to type some code in, I suggest you download Dilwyn's display code which is a machine code extension which reads the screen size - download from:
