It's Google World Mercator, or what ever you want to call it. IMHO any map that uses Mercator will do. I even use Maps with Gauss Krüger which is Transversal Mercator. Let's face it: it's just a 1024x1024 tile. That is too small to see a distortion. I just noticed a 2 or 3 pixel gap on some maps. Yes, there was another request for that a few days ago. I passed it to Marc (he did all the OSM tile stuff) and he said he could do. But as I know Marc this can take a while :). That's not possible in MapSource or BaseCamp. I never understood why they did not implement it. The devices can do. And if you have a clean map abstraction the feature is implemented in a morning. But Garmin's software department is known for strange and on the first spot incompetent decisions. The DEM section of the Garmin maps would be still interesting to decode one day. I suspect it to be a nice source of 1'' DEM data (shh, beware of the copyright!). And I am still looking forward to a nice online DEM source. www.geonames.org is quite nice, however they do not interpolate their 3'' DEM data, resulting in ugly staircase profiles. Hm, just notice, it doesn't work at all right now :/. Have to debug...
