Hi Peter,

loads of questions. Ok, let's go:

It's Google World Mercator, or what ever you want to call it. IMHO any
map that uses Mercator will do. I even use Maps with Gauss Krüger which
is Transversal Mercator. Let's face it: it's just a 1024x1024 tile. That
is too small to see a distortion. I just noticed a 2 or 3 pixel gap on
some maps. But that can be because of various other reasons, too.

If GDAL supports it, QLGT can do, too. I simply pass the file to the
GDAL API und read the pixels from the API. However I did not implement
all variations of color bands possible. But the mainstream is covered.

Personally I am very reluctant leeching huge chunks of data from the
tile servers. These services have to pay the bandwidth and it's not fair
to waist it. Thus I do not really want to add such a feature to QLGT.

But :) there is MOBAC. And it's sole purpose is to create large maps
from tile servers. The application is very well done and perfect for the
job.

Yes, there was another request for that a few days ago. I passed it to
Marc (he did all the OSM tile stuff) and he said he could do. But as I
know Marc this can take a while :). Thus if you really want to have it
you better add it on your own.

I never understood why they did not implement it. The devices can do.
And if you have a clean map abstraction the feature is implemented in a
morning. But Garmin's software department is known for strange and on
the first spot incompetent decisions. See custom maps.

The DEM section of the Garmin maps would be still interesting to decode
one day. I suspect it to be a nice source of 1'' DEM data (shh, beware
of the copyright!). And I am still looking forward to a nice online DEM
source. www.geonames.org is quite nice, however they do not interpolate
their 3'' DEM data, resulting in ugly staircase profiles. Hm, just
notice, it doesn't work at all right now :/. Have to debug...
