Uf! we are recreational ski-tourers. Thought we don't use a 'Physical' DAV
snow card , we follow essentially the same process to evaluate the risk,
based on the well known *Basic reduction method* as a starting point

As I have been using for years a home-made scale with the maps (1) to know
how steep the slope is, I have been doing the same manual process in QLGT
using the polyline tool to take the mesurement between contour-lines,
....but this is laborious.

Now, with the new slope layer in QLGT, this job is quite easy, and in
addittion you can get an overall sight of the slope.

The dynamic dialog showing the resulting numeric values in degrees is
really useful in order to prepare the tour at home. IMHO it can be used
to get a more precise value about how steep the slope is, rather than a
go/stop traffic-light. All this with the logical limitation due to maps and
dems resolutions.

On the technical aspect: I have tried the slope layer with

- 15x20m DEM covering the central section of the Pyrinees (21Mb)
- 50x50m DEM covering Spain made by Jose Luis Domingo (126Mb)
- 5x5m covering Basque Country (1,3 Gb )

added to both raster and .img local maps. QLGT works well with all of them,
and when I change the risk level on the dial, the map refresh with no delay.

Thanks !

(I have some work now to comment about this useful feature in some
spanish mountain forums)

(1) If anyone is interested on the home made scale it is available at

with instructions in basque, spanish, and french (excuse me for the lack of
english, deutsch...)
I hope it will be useful accompanying to the map, when going out on tour
;-)
