Hi Davide,
it depends on your track data. QLGT has a very rough image off the time zones. "Rough" means really rough. Thus borders are very much simplified. And the sea is always UTC. When the track is loaded each track point is tested for a timezone different than UTC. Once a point is found, the complete track is assumed to be that timezone.
This works great as long as the track is in the middle of a country. If it is close to it's borders a wrong timezone might be detected. And if it is close to the shore it might be detected as UTC. That is why you can select the timezone manually if everything fails.
The core problem is to transform the location into a timezone properly. You would need to resolve borders very detailed to make it fail save. There are servers that are able to do so. But I wanted an offline solution and decided to use a PNG as a two dimensional look-up table. The PNG can be found here
http://civicmaps.org/maps/timezone.png
Thus probably your track is close to the seaside and is one of those test cases that fail.

Betreff: [Qlandkartegt-users] Auto time setting
Hi,
how is the automatic time setting (under Configure->General->Time)
supposed to work?
When I select UTC, and load a GPX file, points have the same time they
have in the GPX file (i.e. they are indeed UTC).
When I choose local, time is converted to my local time zone (Rome, UTC+1).
But when I set automatic, they are in UTC again. What is the purpose of
this setting?
Thanks & Cheers,
Davide
