The same thing happens here with version 1.7.4. I saw many messages in the last few days (thread "Using the mapnik tile server"), and I think it's something related with the changes pointed out there. I did not read every single message in that thread, and I don't know how it went in the end. Perhaps somebody else can give us some info?
