This is what Mr Kompf uses: https://www.mapbox.com/tilemill/ and the description says "... At TileMill's core is Mapnik, a powerful, full-featured library that includes support for RGBA color, True Type fonts, rasters, patterns, and even SVG transforms. ..." As the Internet teaches me, RGBA stands for RGB + alpha. So far, anything looks good. Wouldn't a vector format like SVG even be better for sparsely covered special-feature maps? Is there a proper format already implemented in QMS? A quick look here https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Map_Service " .... je nach Aufbau können aber auch verschiedene andere Dateiformate wie Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) ..." leaves any questions open.
