Yes it is invalid. But IMHO the rfc did not say to accept and delete such mails
without any comment. IMHO a good server should give an error information when
(as an example) somebody has a typo in his mailaddress rcpto. Otherwise the
sender thinks the mail arrived properly. I think a  bounce to such a message
would be pleasant.

Whatever, I will change this behaviour on my servers.
