Yes - but if you grab in 1K blobs, SQL is specifically designed for remote
access and the ability to support multiple access and updates on the data.
Yes - there is a performance hit, but--- Microsoft and Oracle both support
native realtime db replication and with some create effort, you could make
regionalised mail stores with replicated LDAP auth-services.  Throw some
Alteon switches in and you can make extremely robust system that would not
be down for any reason short of global thermo nuclear exchange.

This is still very dangerous in my opinion. Locking should be done in
hardware. Just look at the the problems with locking in NFS. And if somebody
comes up with a transaction-based FS, it's not going to use SQL because SQL
is ugly. BTW ReiserFS project has transactions in mind to implement in
future.
