Lots of things aren't "pure DJB", so I'm not sure what you're referring
to there.

And w.r.t ucspi-ssl setting up its own environment variables,
it's doing so in a perfectly UCSPI-compliant way (see section 4 of
<http://cr.yp.to/proto/ucspi.txt>), so I'm not sure what you're saying
there either.
