IMO you should use indexes from the start.

I guess it's an OpenLDAP bug. Which version are you using? Latest stable is
2.0.25.

Which mail agent are they using? Anything in the logs? You can try to set
DEBUG (if you compiled with the option) or record an SMTP session with
recordio.
