Aaron, would you mind supplying more detailed information about your client-side issue?
There are dozens of different combinations of OS, client software, and service packs that unless you supply this information for reproducing the error, someone else trying to reproduce it might have the same behavior but a completely different problem. We're using SMTP AUTH w/ Outlook Express 2000 using Windows 2000 SP1 successfully with the auth_smtp mentioned on the lifewithqmail page as of the 20020901 patch release.
