Well, I've been working on this for a while, It appears that it happens
most often to WinXP Machines, but I've also seen it on win2k and the
9x's as well. I know the service packs don't have a impact on it, nor
does thbe outlook version, because I've had clients update both and
nothing changed. The only thing I've found is different from a working
outlook and a none working outlook is that some of the files versions
are different. You can view these versions by opening outlook and going
to help/About Microsoft Outlook express. Now, the actual outlook files
are not the ones that turn up different on the working and none working
clients. The files like csapi3t1.dll, comctl32.dll, mapi32.dll...etc, or
any file that dosen't have the outlook version as it's version, are
different.

I've setup tcploging via tcpdump, and recordio on the qmail server
though, and I've started changeing the code to the auth-smtp patch, and
I think I've fixed the problem. (I still want to need to do more
testing.) It appears that the windows clients connect to the server
issue a ehlo but then never take any auth request. I have come to
believe that this is because of the way the way the patch presents the
auth offer, I've been looking at servers using the old qmail-auth_smtp
patch for qmail stock, and I've noticed it presents the auth offers
different. I've also read the RFC 2554 and noticed the patch was
missing a few requirments, I've tried to make it more compliant.
If anyone else needs my patch let me know.

I hope this helps for anyone else having this problem

Aaron Collins
