TLS failures in qmail-remote?

Using the latest qmail-ldap and ldap/control patches, I am able to send messages through the qmail-smtp with TLS. However, it seems that qmail-remote is having some trouble with destinations that support tls:

emerchanthelper.com is running:

... which has starttls support:

ehlo saffron.net

250-SIZE
250-PIPELINING
250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN
250-STARTTLS
250 HELP

Any idea what I might be missing here? Mail to non-tls destinations works fine.
