Marc,

exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 4000000 \
/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -v -R -l "$LOCAL" -x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -c
"$MAXSMTPD" \
-u "$QMAILDUID" -g "$NOFILESGID" 0 smtp /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd
2>&1
auth_smtp requires changes to this file. Here's the relevant part from mine:

exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 8000000 \
/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -v -H -R -l "$LOCAL" -x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -c "$MAXSMTPD" \
-u "$QMAILDUID" -g "$NOFILESGID" 0 smtp \
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd /var/qmail/bin/auth_smtp /usr/bin/true 2>&1

Note the arguments to qmail-smtpd. I also increased the softlimit, as I was having some problems running out of memory with SSL. You can set yours as needed.
