exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 4000000 \auth_smtp requires changes to this file. Here's the relevant part from mine:

/var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd /var/qmail/bin/auth_smtp /usr/bin/true 2>&1
Note the arguments to qmail-smtpd. I also increased the softlimit, as I was having some problems running out of memory with SSL. You can set yours as needed.
