If you get the message about stray new line chars then you should change
your script and not trying to hack your correct server.
As per rfc (I think it is 2821) all lines need to end with a "\r\n" aka
CRLF. If you hack the smtpd then you will shoot you in your foot somewhen
later when you change something on the server side.
So do it correct and fix your script.
Why you lost the from address after adding the CRLFs is not easy to
evaluate without the script. I guess it is a bug in the code.
