Just because you get the odd SMTP failure doesn't mean you're losing mail. You're only losing mail because your SMTP client isn't requeuing and trying later... [i.e. it's your fault, not mine ;-)] "Unable to reopen fd 0" means that there is a resource problem on the other end (that's assuming this happens only now-and-then - not continually). Apparently it fixes itself too... Maybe there are memory issues or the like - that's all site-specific and only you can find that out.
