Hmm.

You might want to make sure that you don't have an old version of the
Perl libs laying around.. Like in /usr/local/lib/perl5/ make sure you
don't have a 5.6.0 directory (it should be 5.6.1). 

What happens is that when you build HiRes, it installs into this old
directory (if it exists), and it will never be read by the 5.6.1 Perl
interpreter.

Argh! Yes, I have been using Perl 5.8.0!

But I couldn't get Time::HiRes to install with 5.6.1 -- the CPAN module
complained incessantly, I finally just went and upgraded... it was an
enormous pain in the rear end

What are my options, here? This has been enormously frustrating...
