I was able to solve the problem changing the binary file qmail-inject (with one taken from a working server) because for some reason it wasn't working correctly (I guess some compilation issue with the QMAILQUEUE patch). BTW, to install qmail I followed the procedure listed at
http://www.qmail.org/moni.csi.hu/pub/glibc-2.3.1/ to generate the binary rpms for Redhat 9.0 but I have the feeling that the starting source RPM is not patched correctly.
