There are two very good places to start (besides from the install file).

For a source installation try Alan McKenna's how to at

If you are using Redhat, the best bet is to forget the source packages and pick up Mate
Wierdl's RPMs at

 ftp://moni.msci.memphis.edu/pub/qmail
