I'm under the impression that if I have qmail under the control of a
tcpserver with cdb, I can simply do the following to bypass the rblsmtpd
invocations:
192.168.1.1:allow,RBLSMTPD="",RELAYCLIENT=""
in order to allow an IP to relay, yes? Basically, I'm going to submit my
new dial-nets to the DUL, and I don't want to get burned.

Does anyone have a web-based mail filtering system, for qmail/maildrop
(and even something for defining "new email addresses" using the
"address-ext@" functionality) ? I'm using IMP as a front end for people
to get at CourierIMAP, and don't really fancy making up a idiot proof mail
filtering frontend from scratch, if I could avoid it...

Hi,
You could look at a package called "sieve" from the Cyrus IMAP project. It
is not a web-based, but at least it is server based.

I assume you mean how qmail timestamps incoming mail.
It's possible, but why? Your MUA should have the ability to display UTC
timestamps in local time. Outlook is a notable one that doesn't.

Hi!,
Thanks for the tip. I need to implement something like that, but I only need to send
to the remote address the From and Subject of the email. Any idea how to strip that
from the message?. We are going to implement an email forward service to cell phones
and pagers, so I need only to send that info and not the whole message.
Thanks!,
Martin.

How would I setup and alias to someones pager
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) without creating a local account to
forward the mail from. Or can I not do that. I am new to qmail.. In
sendmail I just added the line to /etc/alliases and was done with it...

You want to create a .qmail-foo file in ~alias that contains
&[EMAIL PROTECTED]
as the only line. This will forward all mail to foo@yourdomain to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Along the same lines, I would like qmail to forward an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
to all the email lists I have setup with ezmlm. I have a
.qmail-all-lists in my ~alias dir.
It contains
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
When I send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I get:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
ezmlm-reject: fatal: List address must be in To: or Cc: (#5.7.0)
for every list in the alias.
Also, how do I protect this alias so only a select few can send a
message to it.
Thanx,
Jay

hey all,
this mail concerns the behaviour of the qmail imap daemon together
with vpopmail 3.4.11 under qmail 1.03 on a suse linux system.
i've come around some problem with the shared folders system under
courier. i can have shared maildirs and they're doing their job very
well - the problem is that as soon as i've subscribed to a shared
folder qmail isn't able to deliver mail locally to my maildir anymore.
the error message (from the maillog) is as follows:
Unable_to_link_tmp_to_new_(#4.3.0)/Yikes!_Could_create_but_can't_delete_temporary_file!!
ENOENT:_path_doesn't_exist/
i think i've already located the (supposed) error - as soon as i
remove the symlink 'shared' (which points to vpopmail/domains/shared_folders/.test)
from
'vpopmail/domains/abc.de/abc/Maildir/shared-folders/test/test') everything
works perfect again, no errors, mail gets sent, no complaints from qmail.
of course i've already tried all chmod's in every possible directory,
i gave the files in all responsible shared-folder-directories to
the vpopmail user, to the qmail users, but nothing brought a change yet,
the error message still remains and mail doesn't get sent to the user's
inbox.
does qmail have a problem with symlinks? the directory does exist and also
i don't see why qmail bothers to read this link, it shouldn't pay
attention to it at all should it?
i also tried to make the shared folder read-only as well as read+write,
and the error occurs in both modes. it really seems to be all about the
'shared'-link and i really don't get what's so wrong with it or why
qmail actually bothers to read (or tries to do something odd with) it.
also, the first part of the error message 'Unable_to_link_tmp etc.'
wasn't there on some earlier tries, it was just 'Can't_create_tempfile'
and then the remaining line.
that's it, i really hope you've already come across that error and know
a way to fix it or change/modify whatever is possible to make it work.
thanks alot for your time, i still think qmail together with vpopmail
and courier rules :)
regards,
markus stalder

That Yikes! error message looks like something inside vpopmail.
That's probably the best place to track it down.

Will using RSS/DUL/RBL etc prevent someone from a blocked site from
sending mail to postmaster at a site using the RSS etc? This is
certainly a Bad Thing ....

Yes, and I agree.
I solved this problem by patching qmail-smtpd to do
the actual rejection of connections, based on
$RBLSMTPD. If RBLSMTPD is set, it will only accept
mail to addresses listed in control/rblrcpts. All
others will be rejected with the error message in
$RBLSMTPD.
Then I added an option to rblsmtpd ("-e") which
would cause it to exec the real smtpd in any case,
but set the RBLSMTPD environment variable if
$TCPREMOTEIP was listed.
It's not a major hack, but I think I would have to
redo the work to a stock smtpd, before I could
publish patches. If there's enough interest, I'll
post them.

This is not quite correct. If you add recipient checking to qmail-smtpd
you are adding an *additional* zillion calls. qmail-local will still need
to do the same work it does now. Any checking in the smtpd is always
additional work.

Well, it depends: If you end up accepting too much mail to invalid
addresses, checking in advance is cheaper than sending out many bounces.
If you only receive a few messages with bogous destinations, validating
the address for all mails has probably a higher cost.
It also depends on the speed of the machine and the bandwith its
connection to the Internet has.

Exactly. Now did you do measurements? :-) What did you find? In
my case, the percentage of mails to invalid addresses is way under
0.01%.

My point.

Speed of the discs, mostly. Yes, I agree. There are too many
factors to be reckoned with. However, I still tend to stand by my
point - even if I'm behind a line where I (um, my employer) pay per
megabyte. :-)

Howdy !
I'm running a standard LWQ install and everything is working except that
I can't send to AOL - I can send to Yahoo OK.
I have no patches installed because I looked from the archive that the
DNS issues had been resolved by AOL.
The Log shows this for an AOL message send:
@4000000038c91e43215e231c new msg 162909

But the message never gets to the recipient.
No bounces are sent or any other feedback.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks !

I had this problem once. It had nothing to do with qmail. AOL, earthlink ...
check the From: and/or Reply-To: domain to make sure it is valid.
I had my internal NIS domain in one of those fields and it would never make
it through.
Send mail to yourself and check.

AOL's mail server accepted the message. qmail did its part. There's
no help anyone here can provide, except condolences that your message
has ended up in AOL's black hole.

In which case the mail would be blocked after MAIL FROM, as in:

mail from:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
550 REQUESTED ACTION NOT TAKEN: DNS FAILURE
The gentleman who wrote posted a log excerpt showing his email being

p.s. why did you quote his entire mail?
I have updated the fixup-queue program available at:
http://www.users.uswest.net/~cmikk/fixup-queue.tar.gz
New in this release:
Bug fixes:
* fixup-queue now behaves properly when qmail-smtpd
exits (e.g. when receiving a bare newline). Before,
it would just hang. Now, it exits just like
qmail-queue does.
* fixup-queue will now handle messages with an empty
envelope sender (e.g. bounces) correctly. The old
version would rewrite them to "@".
New feature:
* fixup-queue now does forwarding: if the FORWARD
environment variable is set, its value is taken as
the name of the fastforward-format cdb file.

I just installed qmail and made sure it was working with smtp.
I compiled autorespond.c per the instructions, and I am getting an error in

Both. They refused your message because they didn't like the envelope
return path. It's their problem in the sense that you can't make them
accept such messages. It's your problem in the senses that (1) your
mail bounced, and (2) you may be able to change the sender address to
something they'll accept.

You could use an MTA on one of the higher levels as a relay--if
they'll let you and they have better connectivity.

I wanted to say thank you to everytone that helped, amazingly enough I
was able to solve the problem by installing the dns patch, and using my
isp as a relay.

First, entries in locals are domains, so things like "mail" and
"babel" are useless. Second, locals doesn't support wilcarding, so
".sintesoft.net" is useless.
># cat virtualdomains

sintesoft.net is in locals, and qmail-send looks there first, so
sintesoft is local, not virtual.

OK, so qmail wasn't able to connect to the remote sites. Do you have
evidence that these sites were reachable by your system at the time,
and that they were responding to port 25?

xdelay is the how long the delivery attempt took. It depends primarily
on network latency and the speed of the remote SMTP server. If the
increase you're seeing is caused by raising concurrencies or incoming
sessions, it's probably due to either saturating your network link or
overwhelming remote servers. It could, however, be unrelated to the
changes you made.

Because you're trying to restart tcpserver on the POP port every time

Even better, you should create a /var/qmail/supervise/qmail-pop3d
directory with a run script and a log directory with a run script--see
/var/qmail/supervise/qmail-smtpd for a model.

Probably. But whom did you really send it to? You imply that you
expect to receive it yourself, but that doesn't narrow it down very
much. It could be to yourself, or one of your aliases, or a system
account aliased to you. Give us the actual address, and the contents of
all relevant .qmail* files.
(My theory is that it's a bad alias. I shot myself in the foot this
way last month, but got a different message because I was using mbox
format, so I can't yet tell whether you've done the same.)

qmail-remote doesn't make up envelope return paths. If it's using
<........lo0.......>, that's because that's what the message had when
it came in.

What is this? You really used abc.com, and its MX is 1.2.3.4? And the
unbalanced '<' error is not the same as a sender of
<........lo0.......>.

While the intent of qmail's code is NOT to make up a return path by itself,
in that case your statement is not true. I have spent some time lookup
through the code and tracing where that happens, and I found it.
There is a bug in the FreeBSD code that deals with "ifconf". What happens is
that FreeBSD returns more data than was requested by qmail. This causes the
return path to be overwritten with garbage.
While the proper fix should be to repair FreeBSD, it has to be noted that
the method employed by qmail in the function ipme_init() to find the list of
all the interfaces of the system is really not the best. The code starts
with a 256 bytes buffer and then increments it gradually issueing a system
call each time to fill up the memory area with the proper information.
A size of 256 bytes is good enough in cases where you only have one
interface (in addition to lo0 of course). In my case, I have 8 interfaces so
to get it right the code has to do 5 iteration before it reads everything.
The quick fix is to allocate a fairly big chunk of memory (1500 bytes) right
from the start. This solves my problem. Also it would reduce the number of
system calls necessary to obtain the list of all the network interfaces. I
don't think that saving a few bytes is worth the number of system calls. Of
course the kernel needs to be fixed, but that's another story.
A patch that fixes my problem is included at the end of this email for
anybody to use if they encounter the same symptoms. Beware though that it
may not be working in all cases. It works in mine, that's all I can say.
>
> What is this? You really used abc.com, and its MX is 1.2.3.4? And the

Yes the error is directly related to the problem I described. The remote end
of the SMTP connection tries to understand the sender's address and stops
processing it after 2 consecutive dots. It then complains that it did not
find the closing '>'. I just did a little bit of homework before asking a
question.
Patrick.

Here is a piece of code that will test if your implementation is subject to
the bug I experienced on my FreeBSD installation. This bug can manifest
itself with a few interfaces (one can be enough) with non-IPv4 configuration
(such as netatalk). I just submitted a patch for FreeBSD (both 4.0 and 3.x).
If your system contains the bug, let me know (as well as the vendor of
course).
This bug is probably present in most of the BSD socket implementations...
There are 2 variants of it:
- pure and simple buffer overflow (this is the one present on FreeBSD 3.x)
- no buffer overflow, but the announced size of the returned buffer is
incorrect (this one is present in the latest FreeBSD 4.0 [after feb 28,
2000]).

Beats me.

Nope.
When you say "check my email", what do you mean exactly?

I am currently using INETD instead of the tcpserver as a, I got to get
it running, temp patch. Does anyone know of any instrutions or have any
how-to's on setting up tcpserver (For virtual and primary domains). Heck
even a copy of some lines from a running inetd.conf would be nice

You have a local server that handles aceindia.com. Is it qmail?

What do you mean? You have users on this system who are not on the
system? If so, just put their remote addresses in a .qmail file in
~alias.

OK, a second local system, running qmail, that uses the above local
server?

You lost me. Please rephrase.

Who says you can't do this in qmail?
If I understand correctly, you have a qmail box, and on that box, mail
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] should go to your ISP's mailhub, but mail for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] should be considered local.
This could be accomplished by putting aceindia.com in control/locals,
and "xyz@ispmailhub" in ~alias/.qmail-xyz.

Hello Steve,
Well I decided to test my mail server here so I used a domain name that
we own and added an MX record for it pointing to the qmail server. Then on
my Linux box I did
/home/vpopmail/bin/vadddomain silverware-inc.com
/home/vpopmail/vadduser [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I then sent a message to the new address and got the below error message.
Well I added silverware-inc to the locals file and I dont get the error
message anymore, but I also dont recieve the message!!! I am using qmail
and vpopmail FYI. Now, when I check the POP account
[EMAIL PROTECTED] there is no mail in it. Where is my message!!!
There is nothing in the qmail queue.
Is there something obvious I am missing here?? Thanks.

It's obviously important or it wouldn't be there. Can anyone explain
why?
>From qmail-send.c: markdone():
for (;;)
{
fd = open_write(fn.s);
if (fd == -1) break;
if (fstat(fd,&st) == -1) { close(fd); break; }
if (seek_set(fd,pos) == -1) { close(fd); break; }
if (write(fd,"D",1) != 1) { close(fd); break; }
/* further errors -> double delivery without us knowing about it, oh
well */
close(fd);
return;
}
Thanks!

Forgive my speculation--if I'm wrong, somebody correct me! My guess is
that fstat() follows open() because of system-specific open() bugs.
On NFS, for example, open() will sometimes return a descriptor, but
subsequent write() calls will fail with EACCESS. This condition can be
detected through error slippage by calling fstat(), which will also
fail with EACCESS.

The whole point of modern `standards' is to preserve the existing
oligopoly. A few vendors band together to produce a `standard' that
is precisely the disjoint union of their existing implementations,
including all their warts.

In reading the setup of QMail at the following address
http://Web.InfoAve.Net/~dsill/lwq.html
It show how to make a new startup file. Am I going to need anything in
my inetd.conf or can I comment out the smtp and pop3 sections?

No. Thou shalt NOT have anything in your inetd.conf.
Do comment out the smtp and pop3 sections!
Otherwise inetd will grab the ports and tcpserver can't.
