What happens when you telnet to port 110 and manually log in? E.g.:

  $ telnet 0 110
  Trying 0.0.0.0...
  Connected to 0.
  Escape character is '^]'.
  +OK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
  user dave
  +OK 
  pass password
  +OK 
  quit
  +OK
