You're actually putting "$HOME" into the mailMessageStore attribute? Drop it.
You've got three choices:
- if you define homeDirectory,
1 - mailMessageStore must be relative to that.
- else,
2 - mailMessageStore must be a full path,
or
3 - relative to qmail's "control/ldapmessagestore"
