But the smtpd session you showed before was NOT qmail-smtpd. Do it
again and show us the whole session:

    telnet 1.2.3.4 25
    helo bozo
    help
    mail from: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
    rcpt to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
    quit
