qmail dead but subsys locked.

I am facing a peculiar problem. On our server, qmail seems to be running fine, but when I do "qmail status", it says   "qmail dead but subsys locked".   When I do "ps aux|grep mail" all normal qmail processes are present.   Any ideas on this?   Thanks, -Krishnan.
