It's still POP3, whether you use qpopper or qmail-pop3d.  Passwords still
travel in the clear.  If you don't like, use APOP (ech) or tunnel POP3 over
SSL.

You didn't configure it properly, then.  But with an error report like that,
not even Russell can help you :).
