Qmail makes the determination in qmail-getpw after determining the
local part:
pw = getpwnam(username);
What does:
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-getpw alias
...return?
It should be something like:
alias1000102/var/qmail/alias
If it's not, you have some kind of problem there.
Is the alias user in shadow as well?
