qmail-pop3d inbox messages limit

I have noticed that if a user has more than about 5500 messages
in their inbox the server dies with the following error:

-ERR unable to scan $HOME/Maildir

I look at qmail-pop3d.c but couldn't see anything that would
explain this.

Any thoughts?
