Exact steps to take:
1. Follow the directions for getting all your services ready with
daemontools/ucspi-tcp -- Dan's instructions are good, but not newbie
friendly. A more newbie friendly source of docs for
daemontools/ucspi-tcp and qmail is:
http://www.lifewithqmail.org/
Read it. Know it. Live it.
Make sure you don't actually _start_ any services yet.
2. Completely disable all SMTP, POP and IMAP service in xinetd.
3. Start services as per whichever source of directions you've used
above.
It's not tricky, as long as you read and understand the docs before
proceeding.

As far as I'm concerned, it's worth doing no matter how many mails
you're sending per day. Enhanced security and greater speed, for so
little effort (it's _dead_ easy to set up a local cache, especially if
you're already running daemontools. 'make setup check' and one symlink)
is always worth it.
