Can anyone recommend an open-relay list that one *should* use?
One problem I have with any of the relay probes is that they play a lot of
tricks to try to get a relay through. This causes a lot of (poorly configured)
big ISP mail servers to get listed, when they probably have not actually
relayed spam by being tricked into doing so by a spammer. My servers have been
probed many times by spammers, and they've never tried anything other than a
straightforward relay--no percent hack trickery or anything (though perhaps
others' experiences have been different).
Yes, the trick-susceptible mail servers are poorly configured, but they
probably haven't been used as spam relays as a result of these
misconfigurations, and I get lots of complaints from users when some big-time
ISP gets itself listed. I'd prefer an open-relay list of more blatantly open
relays.
