Check that your 'flag' variable in your arguments to autoresponder
is set to something other than 2 or 4.  For example, your .qmail-vacation
file should look like

|/usr/local/bin/autorespond 10000 5 /path/to/message/text 
    /path/to/directory/of/message/text 0

(all on one line)
