If you are running on FreeBSD and updated to 4.3-stable, they have unified
libcrypt library. It might not be accepting DES passwords anymore.
It's worth a look.
check login.conf
check /etc/auth.conf for a "crypt_default" line.
Also on some other list someone reported a similar problem after updating
his openssl.
I never had this problem since I always used MD5...
Try to change the postmaster password and see if you can login after you do
that. And view your password file to make sure that the new password you
set is the same encryption (MD5 or DES) like the other passwords. If the
new password is MD5 and the old are DES, or vice-versa, then you know what
the problem is.
Anyway, just some ideas.
