I assume it's so you can have thousands of email accounts for a domain without the directory getting bogged down by thousands of .qmail files. The user directories get hashed, and vdelivermail can look up the destination directory in whatever backend you've designed.


With MySQL, you can even add accounts by creating an entry in the vpopmail table, without having to do anything to the directory structure.
