Does this happens with the squirrelmail application or independently from the interface you use (IE a client like Outlook reports the same error)?
Does it happen with different recipients on different servers or just with users on a specific remote mail server? If you want to try, you can send me 6mb of trash to try out with a different recipient ...and I can send your crap back to see if your smtp is able to receive 6mb+ :-) These are the first 2 things I'd check (php upload limits and remote receiver capabilities)... maybe someone else might be able get you straight to the point though...
