Someone told me that the bounces can be redirected to /dev/null, and
that's the way to disable them. Has anyone done that before.

To the best of my knowledge, there is not without going in a modifying 
the source code. The bounce messages are in the RFC, which QMail tries 
it's best to be compliant with.
You would have to go back into QMail's source and remove the routines 
for the bounced messages.
