Looks as if others had to remove
simscan, clamav, and spamassassin (in that order) and
reinstalled them in reverse order
Maybe what I will end up doing.

gives me this error : LibClamAV Error: cl_cvdhead: Can't open file

# /var/qmail/bin/simscanmk; /var/qmail/bin/simscanmk
-g;qmailctl cdb
still getting this error: LibClamAV Error: cl_cvdhead: Can't open file
/usr/share/clamav/daily.cvd
file perms on main.cvd and daily.cvd are 644 and owner:group
clamav:clamav
No errors in /var/log/qmail/clamav/current.
