I turn off time-sync in vmware tools and run ntp- in .../VMHOST.vmx tools.syncTime = "FALSE"
It keeps good time, doesn't care much how busy VMHOST is, and does not require all the special configuration. A normal redhat install does an ntp setup. Use your own ntp server or make sure your firewall lets the public ones through.
