Are you using Spamdyke? If so, is it possible that spamdyke's "greeting-delay-secs" is set to something greater than 5?

Once you've gotten the 220 message, does it continue to respond slowly to other commands?

Not sure if this was helpful or not, but its the first thing that came to mind - and no one mentioned anything along these lines yet.

Good luck Christian.

Hi,

The email sending on my qmail toaster is very slow... when I troubleshoot using
telnet, I found
that it takes more than 30 sec to get the message Welcome message "220
serve..."

[root@hostname /]# telnet server.domain.com 25
Trying 111.111.111.111...
Connected to server.domain.com (111.111.111.111).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 server.domain.com - Welcome to Qmail Toaster Ver. 1.3 SMTP Server ESMTP

How can I know/find what's wrong with the config?

Best Regards,
Christian

Good suggestions thus far.
I would suspect DNS problem first.
