If you're rebuilding, I suggest doing so with COS6. It's a lot simpler.

Where are you seeing this message?
qmail-remote should be initiated by qmail-rspawn, which is
initiated by qmail-send.
I'm wondering if there's something in the queue with improper
permissions from before that's jamming up the works.
I'd try removing everything from the queue (using qmHandle) and see
if that clears things up.
