In my humble opinion, and admittedly it is only that, an opinion, it seems to me that the problem would most likely be with the CentOS 6 system and it's associated software primarily OpenSSL.

If it were me I'd compile OpenSSL 3 on the system and compile qmail against it and install the packages manually so as not to interfere with other software. If you have a VE and create a VM it would be much less intrusive.
