I agree. Just tonight one of my developers pointed out a bug when scrolling 
down using the keyboard - the horizontal scroll kicked in. That's because the 
focus was in the third column, which had to be scrolled to see it completely.

There are many applications when you don't edit in-place, but need the 
flexibility that the table offers. In that case a line-select mode is what is 
needed.
