Something is amiss.  The domTarget I received, after clicking on the
open/close icon, was a <div>, not an <img>.  I didn't investigate which div it
was.

I'll keep domTarget in mind for possible future use, but for now, the solution
other solution you led me to has no noticeable delay during normal "user
interaction", so is very adequate for the purpose.
