Okay, so, for those of us who are using 0.6.6, even if only for the 
interim, this is what I did to get this to work (what a pain!):

I subclassed label and added an event listener for the "create" event. 
Inside of the handler for the "create" event, I called "setStyleProperty".

We'll be going for 0.7 eventually, but wow, what a pain this was.  At 
least it's looking like it should now!
