This points to some inefficiencies of our current widget system. We will address them in the rework of our current layouter planned for 0.8. The list view works on a pure widget basis and adding or removing 800 entries results in 800 additional widgets. You are right, the List is simply not made to handle large sets of data. The "virtual" widgets Table and ListView are way better suited for such tasks.
