You can do that using the "Remote" table model.  Alternatively, you
can do something similar to what treevirtual does, and maintain both a
full data model and a "to-be-rendered" data model.  In the case of
treevirtual, the full data model contains all of the nodes, even those
not currently expanded in the tree, while the "to-be-rendered" data
model contains only those nodes that are currently visible.  The
"to-be-rendered" data model is rebuilt as changes occur, and even with
5000 nodes in the tree, is still quite fast.  If you were to have huge
trees, I'd go with the Remote table model.
