Christian, I can't answer your question. However, an other option for you
is for the cell editor to be a modal window. That is already explicitely
supported. You can put anything you want into that modal window, i.e. it
can be as sophisticated a set of widgets as you'd like. It then just needs
to return the appropriate value to be placed back into the cell. The loss
of focus or closing of the modal window is what indicates that editing is
complete.
