When I tried Jython 2.5b0 a while time ago, I had quite some success (but never really tried to use it on a daily basis). Since the newer Jython version was (and still is) quite beta, I don't consider it ready for production use, but you should give it a try in a Java environment nonetheless. Since there is a newer Jython 2.5b4, it may be even better suited.
