Hello Stefan,
it's much easier than you thought. The DateField uses a location dependent
formater to convert the given Date to the string you see in the textfield.
So why don we just use the same approach with your problem:

dateField.getDateFormat().format(dateField.getValue());

This should always return exactly the string you see in the text field of
the date field. I hope thats the easier solution you were looking for. :)
